Grade Game: Understanding CGPA and Revaluation

About GPA and CGPA

Each semester, students enroll in various subjects, each carrying a specific number of credits. The total credits for a semester can vary, typically ranging from 24 to 27 credits, which sums up to a cumulative total of 240 or 270 credits for the entire course.

Example Semester Credit Distribution

  • Total Semester Credits: 24 (or 240 in scaled terms)
  • Subject Credits:
    • 4 credits (equivalent to 40 in scaled terms)
    • 3 credits (equivalent to 30 in scaled terms)
    • 1 credit (equivalent to 10 in scaled terms)

Marks and Grading System

The evaluation for each subject is a combination of internal assessments (out of 60 marks) and external examinations (out of 40 marks), making a total of 100 marks. Some subjects, such as practical labs or projects, might have different evaluation methods and total marks. For instance, a lab with 1 credit might only have internal assessments.

Revaluation and Rechecking

When it comes to revaluation and rechecking of exam papers, it’s essential to understand the process and strategize accordingly to maximize the potential benefit. Here are some key points to consider:

Important Points Before Rechecking

  1. Check Your Internal and External Marks: Your total marks are a combination of internal (out of 60) and external (out of 40) assessments. Note that you cannot change internal marks; only external marks can be rechecked.

  2. Difficulty in Gaining Significant Marks: It’s generally challenging to gain more than 30-32 marks through rechecking.

  3. Strategic Subject Selection: Choose to recheck subjects where your total marks are close to significant thresholds like 60, 70, 80, or 90. For instance, if your total marks are 57, 58, 69, 77, or 79, rechecking might be beneficial.

Scenarios for Rechecking

Scenario 1: Marks Close to Grade Thresholds

If you have a total of 70 marks (A grade) with 40 internal and 30 external marks, you need an additional 10 marks in external to change your CGPA significantly. Even if you gain 9 marks through rechecking (making your total 79), your grade remains the same (A grade), resulting in no change in CGPA.

Scenario 2: Marks Near Next Grade

If your marks are like 69, 79, 68, 78, or 74, and you believe you can gain 4-5 marks through rechecking, it might be worthwhile. For instance, if you have 77 marks and gain an additional 3 marks through rechecking, your total becomes 80. This change will upgrade your grade from A to A+, thereby increasing your CGPA.

For instance, if you have a 4-credit subject and your grade changes from A (32 points) to A+ (36 points) after rechecking, you gain 4 additional credit points.
